***WARNING: if you are easily offended you might want to skip this post. I get a bit preachy.***
As most of you know, my brother Wes has Down Syndrome.
He's a handsome guy if I'm allowed to say so. But aside from his dashing good looks, he's also one of the sweetest people I've ever met.
All he wants in life is acceptance,
for who he is,
Wesley Kocher.
Not acceptance with a caveat of someone who is disabled.
Not acceptance with a side of pity because he is mentally delayed.
Just acceptance.
He's so willing to help.
He forgives almost instantly.
He never holds a grudge.
He's the first to introduce himself.
And he's so patient and PROUD of his niece.

2010
2011
He has a great attitude and fun personality.
Wes LOVES to make you laugh.
Not afraid to be silly either.
And never once has he questioned WHY he was born with an extra chromosome. He doesn't care. He is doing the best he can and making the most out of the hand he was dealt.
I may be older than Wes, but I definitely look up to him.
He and I have something in common:
we are both dealing with something that is out of our hands.
He didn't ASK to be different.
I didn't ASK to get lupus.
He didn't DO anything to create an extra chromosome.
I didn't DO anything to make my immune system not work.
He CAN'T explain what it's like to be Down Syndrome.
I can't explain what it's REALLY like to have lupus.
He doesn't have a CURE for Down Syndrome.
I don't have a CURE for Lupus.
And yet, there are some, that will judge, ridicule, poke fun, and disrespect anyway. I have heard the word "retarded" used out of context my entire life.
I have heard it from:
complete strangers, friends of mine, friends of the family, and yes, even family members (close family members).
My amazing brother (and ROLE MODEL) lets it roll right off his shoulders. Doesn't even give it air to breathe.
And he knows when some one is making fun of him.
He may be mentally delayed, but he's not stupid.
He has feelings.
He understands a lot more than people give him credit.
But he holds his head high and keeps on walking to the beat of his own drum.
I love that about him. And the next time he sees you, he won't hold it against you that you used the word out of context. He's already forgiven you.
I sure wish I could be more like him. Though I won't say anything to you, nor will I let you even know that that word used out of context is like "nails on a chalkboard" to me. It stays with me. And it makes me sad.
Mainly sad for you. Because you are obviously missing God's whole purpose in putting Wes in our life. Wes is here to bless us, teach us, humble us, and love us.
I've heard so many reasons why people who say it, justify it:
• "It's not directed AT him."
• "I don't mean anything by it."
• "If I stopped saying every word that could be offensive, I wouldn't have any words left."
• "You should focus on bigger problems than the misuse of ONE word."
• "It's just a word."
I respect your Freedom of Speech, you are certainly entitled to use the words of your choice.
I hope you are respecting my freedom to speak freely in this post as well, hear me out.
The next time you want to say something is "retarded", please exercise your vocabulary, think about how it "could" be offensive to someone and kindly choose a different word. After all, it is JUST a word, right? Can easily be replaced with something else?
Because unless you are using it to describe something that is truly a gift from God, you are probably using it out of context.
Thanks for keeping an open mind and reading all the way to the end. My intent for this post was not to offend anyone, simply to raise awareness for the misuse of the "r" word. I'd love to hear your thoughts, please leave a comment below.
I understand more then you know Bev. We will be facing the same thing with Max. We are hoping to have a diagnosis for him at the end of August. Both parents are diagnosed as mildly mentally retarded so who knows where he will be on the spectrum.
ReplyDeleteBut I am proud to say that having known Wes his whole life, it makes me feel that Max can become anything he wants to be and be the best at it that he can do. It may not meet any one else's standards but it will be HIS best.
One last thought, of my 4 kids, the two that have the mental type challenges are my two sweetest. So what they may lack according to so called public opinion they sure make up for in their determination and their loving and sweet ways. Because believe me there are days that I would trade off the other two for a whole 6 pack of Max and David type kids!
Just sayin'
Wes is blessed because he is pure in his ways and the joy and forgiveness is definitely heaven sent and he has no inkling of knowledge to manipulate and he is sincere and very handsome...inside and out... the Lord wants us to come to him in the way that Wes lives his life....like a child...Loving unconditionally....
ReplyDeleteto be as honest as a child is truly a blessing... Blessed he is!! Only met him once but Love him already.....
You made me cry. What a wonderful person you are!
ReplyDeleteBev,
ReplyDeleteGod sure has blessed you and your family, I must say that to start with. And, I cried reading your post. I can somewhat understand what you and Wes go through. Both of my boys have ADHD and they are not ever "settle"when we are in public even with medication and proper diet. The looks we get and one stranger came up to me and asked me what kind of mother I was to let my children act "wild" in the grocery store. For the longest time, I thought I was a horrible momma to my babies. But, then I realized I wasn't, God intended for me to be their momma instead of giving them to a lady like her. I could only imagine what kind of mother she would be or is. I don't understand why people have to be so rude. Your brother seems to be AMAZING just as you are! Keep spreading the word....not worrying about who you offend, they are the ONLY ones who should feel guilty. May God continue to bless ya'll! ~April
Very well said Bev, Wes is the sweetest guy I know. Makes me sad to hear what people say to him. They really just need to get to know him. I look forward to my hug everytime I see him.
ReplyDeleteVery well put Bev! Althought I haven't seen your brother for a while, everything you said is true. I can't say that I have never said the word, but now that I'm older I regret every saying it. I grew up with a mentally challenged neighbor, we had fun together. They are just like you or me, in their own way.
ReplyDeleteWes sounds like he is a whole lot smarter than a lot of people I know! Well said! This could be published; I would send this to some magazines and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteSo well said Bev, I have never met your brother but love him already! You are both lucky to have each other...I agree, you need to send that blog to a magazine or the news! You have an amazing way with words!
ReplyDeleteoh bev you know how I feel about this too. Everyone I work with knows it offends me greatly and they have all tired to stop using the word. In fact there is an orginization called "r-word" http://www.r-word.org/ that is trying to stop the use of it. In my house its considered a curse word.
ReplyDeleteBev you are an amazing writer... we should all be a little more like wes.
ReplyDeleteIt's related to the "s-word" (stupid) one I don't like!
ReplyDeleteYour post should make everyone focus on whats important and that is love, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling only people say he's rude, loud and a pain other kids teaseand anger me and yet he wants to br there friend. So yes I know the feeling and I know how much it hurts ,I've cryed many tears and will cry many more.It never gets easier either.Tell him we love him for him!Love you All
ReplyDeleteWes is special, he has a sister like you and you have an amazing brother. I think we all use words of out context a little too much these days and some people say things before they think. Wes is someone we should all look up too because he forgives and keeps on loving you just the same. Great post!
ReplyDeleteBev, you are amazing! I agree with your friend who said you should publish your comments. The world is full of a whole lot of stupid people who just don't think before they talk. I have never met Wes, but I feel like I have known him for years! What's more...I love him too! You go girl!
